Although not an attraction that appeals to everyone, the Cimitière de Père Lachaise is the final resting place for many of the most famous inhabitants of Paris.  If you are interested in visiting, see our handy map showing the location of the cemetery in Paris that attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. 

A good way to  find explore  the cemetery,  is to buy one of the tourist maps being sold by vendors outside of the cemetery, as the grounds of Père Lachaise are both complex and extensive.

Père Lachaise is the final resting place of Marcel Proust, Oscar Wilde, Edith Piaf, Maria Callas Frederic Chopin, Sarah Bernhardt, Gertrude Stein, Honoré de Balzac, George Bizet, Maria Callas, Eugene Delacroix, Jim Morrison, Yves Montand, Simon Signoret and numerous, world-famous personalities, many whose popularity has increased after their deaths.

Although not an official website, if you are interested in a virtual tour of the Père Lachaise and the location of the graves of many of the famous who are interred at the cemetery, this website should do the trick.   Alternatively,  for more information and some great photographs, you may want to purchase the fascinating guidebook-tour  "Meet Me at Père Lachaise" or the iPod audio-tour offered by the same author (ThereArePlaces has no association either with the author or the product).

The Cemetery is served by the Phillipe Auguste and Père Lachaise Metro stations, as well as the Gambetta station.

Open weekdays from 0800 to 1800 and on Saturdays and Sundays from 0900 to 1800.
