For most of us there is no substitute for a room in a hotel on the Strip (Las Vegas Boulevard). Gamblers want to hit the floor and "roll the dice", not to take a 30 minute drive across town to get to their casino of choice. For many, the ability to roll out of bed and be on the Strip in minutes is a must and most visitors choose to stay at one of the hotels clustered along Las Vegas Boulevard. For others, a room on the Strip is important since they want to play until they are nearly out of energy and, then, take a close-by elevator to their room.

Las Vegas is a town of extremes and its casino-resorts are a prime example of the highs and lows. We have reviewed hotel-casinos on or near the Strip, given them a quality rating  that mixes the ambiance of the casino, the amenities of the hotel, the quality of the rooms and the "buzz" surrounding the establishment.

We categorize  hotels as occurring in “tiers”. We start with the highest tier hotels (four star), which we think are the best places to stay in Las Vegas. Lower tiers are simply that – hotels which do not fit into the category above it. Our tiers reflect quality and indirectly room rates, although we did not specifically rate room cost, since each casino-hotel has a wide variety of room types with wide price ranges. We leave the rest to you.

Jump to the bottom of the page to find a legend that explains the various icons and tools used to describe our hotel recommendations.  If you plan to walk "The Strip", to see the casino-resorts, use our Walking Map.  Finally, remember that we cover restaurants, shows and everything else in Las Vegas in other sections of our Guide.

While focused on the Strip, our Las Vegas Guide also covers Off-Strip casino-resorts near Las Vegas Boulevard and others located in suburban, Las Vegas.

Wynn's is the place to be on the Strip in 2007. The crowds are large and the gaming action is exciting.  The casino, grounds, eating and shopping are magnificent.  On its opening, the Wynn set a new standard for luxury and its upscale rooms are a cut above.

In late 2008, Wynn Las Vegas opened Encore Las Vegas, located next door to the Wynn.   It is all you would expect of a Steve Wynn property and offers over 2000 luxury suites.  The feeling of the property is "opulence", it borrows from the Wynn and in several cases exceeds it.

The Palazzo Resort Hotel Casino
3325 Las Vegas Boulevard South
Las Vegas, Nevada 89109

Notables
The newest luxury hotel in Las Vegas opened mid-January, 2008.  By the way, the early reviews of the hotel have not been complimentary.  Apparently, it is not quite finished, the signature restaurants are not in operation and the pool has not been completed.  Wait a few months for the construction to finish and the staff to organize - unless you are an adventurer.  This all-suite property is lavishly styled and its suites feature sunken living rooms that are decorated in a modern European style with "luxurious" appointments.  Top chefs who have restaurants in the Palazzo include Charlie Trotter, Emeril LaGase, and Wolfgang Puck.  The hotel is owned by the Sands Corporation, owners of the Venetian, and the two hotel-resorts share services.  Considered as a combined entity, the two hotels will provide over 7,000 rooms.

  • Hot Nightclub  The 40/40 Club by Jay-Z , one of the new "hot-spots" in Las Vegas, mirrors its sister establishment in Manhattan.  The name refers to baseball (40 home runs and 40 stolen bases in one season) and the decoration include sports memorabilia.
  • Great Spa!  The hotel offers the services of the world famous Canyon Ranch Spaclub, which included as 40 foot rock climbing wall, for those so inclined.

At the far northern edge of the strip, the Stratosphere is not terribly popular as a casino or a hotel, although its thrill rides attract many to the top of its Observation Tower. At 1149 feet the Stratosphere is the tallest freestanding observation tower in the U.S. and tallest building west of Mississippi River.

  • At the top of the  Stratosphere there are  three incredible thrill-rides.
    • Insanity spins you in a cage hanging over the side of the building.
    • XScream slides you down a teeter-totter-like apparatus that eventually levers you over the edge and dangles you 100 stories over the Strip.
    • Big Shot shoots you from the roof of the Tower to the top of the mast, a distance of about 16 stories, at 35 miles per hour (and you thought the ride up was the bad part, wait till the cage  falls back to the bottom).
    • Do not eat before riding, unless you have a cast iron stomach. These rides are great fun, but scary as all get-out. If you are risk averse, these are not the rides for you. Age and height restrictions apply.

Off Strip (Palms, Hard Rock Hotel, Las Vegas HiltonRio)

There are a number of hotels that are not on the Strip that are reasonably popular.  The Las Vegas Hilton is very popular with the Convention crowd, since it is located right next to the Las Vegas Convention Center.  The Palms is very popular with the in crowd and the RIO has the most popular free show in Las Vegas.

Palms Casino Resort
4321 West Flamingo Road
Las Vegas, NV 89103

Notables
The Palms is very popular with the pro sports crowds and many others.  It is one of the "in" places to be in Las Vegas, even more so since the first Playboy Club in 25 years opened at the Palms late in 2006.  Atop the Palms new Fantasy Tower building, the Playboy Club integrates a club atmosphere with gambling.

  • The Palms state-of-the-art concert theater "The Pearl" http://www.palmspearl.com/    opened in  2007 and is one of the "in" venues in Las Vegas.

  • Great Spa!  The Palms Spa is a terrific place for personal indulgence. Hotel guests only. (1 702 942 6937).

  • Hot Nightclub  The Rain nightclub at the Palms is a 28,000 square foot, adult-oriented, night spot.  It is one of the hottest places in Las Vegas.  Open Thursday - Saturday from 11pm to 5 am.  (Reservations required: tel. 1 702 942 6832).  See the Rain website  for more information .    Also check the Ghostbar for one of the most spectacular views of Las Vegas (55 floors above Las Vegas) -open 7 nights a week, 8pm to early morning.  The Rain website mentioned above also contains information about the Ghostbar.  Finally, you might consider taking a look at The Lounge at the Palms, which features live entertainment and special events.

Hard Rock Hotel & Casino (aerial viewAerial view of the casino-resort)

1 800 HRD ROCK
4455 Paradise Road
Las Vegas NV 89109

Notables
Another of the trendy, off-strip hotels. It has a smaller and more intimate feel than many hotels in Las Vegas. If you are a rocker (even the air guitar type) you should spend some time at the Hard Rock Hotel.  Note: The Hardrock is currently adding  almost a thousand rooms to the property, which will be under construction until 2009.  Not that this makes much difference to most visitors of this "hotlist" property.

Good value, good grub. Great free show (See our Free Attractions Section for more information).

  • Hot Nightclub  The Rio's Voodoo Lounge, at the very top of the hotel, offers panoramic views of Las Vegas, as well as being one of the city's hot spots.  The Lucky Strike, Flirt and I-Bar can be fun, so check them out as well.

More Detail on the Information We Provide About Casino-Resorts Top of Page

The information we provide for each hotel includes its web site URL, telephone number for reservations and the hotel address.

For some resorts we mention “notables” that, in our estimation, set a specific hotel-casino apart from others. Most of the attractions mentioned are fee-based. Check the hotel web sites for more detail. Every hotel has a variety of restaurants to meet your culinary needs.  We showcase the best restaurants on or near the strip in our section on Las Vegas restaurants.  We cover the leading entertainment on the Strip is covered in our section on Best Shows in Las Vegas.

Hotels with the best spas in Las Vegas are shown with this symbol Great Spa!.

Hot Nightclub  We cover the best nightlife (marked by the martini symbol to the left) by hotel. If you plan on "clubbing" in Vegas, make reservations or be disappointed (contact numbers are provided in our description of the hotel's notables).  Also, most clubs have fashion standards that prohibit shorts, hats, jeans, tennis shoes, athletic wear, and other clothing deemed to be "too casual". Check in advance about the club's standards.

In addition, we provide a map of the Strip that shows the location of the major hotels along with walking distances between major intersections. We've added another map of the Strip using Google Maps with their Satellite View so that you can see the hotels from the air.

The aerial views (symbolized by an airplane towing a camera (aerial viewAerial view of the hotel)   require a lot of bandwidth.  If you have a dial-up connection, you may prefer not to access these map-images.  The are view link is  shown next to the hotel listing.
