For most of us there is no substitute for a room in a hotel on the Strip (Las Vegas Boulevard). Gamblers want to hit the floor and "roll the dice", not to take a 30 minute drive across town to get to their casino of choice. For many, the ability to roll out of bed and be on the Strip in minutes is a must and most visitors choose to stay at one of the hotels clustered along Las Vegas Boulevard. For others, a room on the Strip is important since they want to play until they are nearly out of energy and, then, take a close-by elevator to their room.

Las Vegas is a town of extremes and its casino-resorts are a prime example of the highs and lows. We have reviewed hotel-casinos on or near the Strip, given them a quality rating  that mixes the ambiance of the casino, the amenities of the hotel, the quality of the rooms and the "buzz" surrounding the establishment.

We categorize  hotels as occurring in “tiers”. We start with the highest tier hotels (four star), which we think are the best places to stay in Las Vegas. Lower tiers are simply that – hotels which do not fit into the category above it. Our tiers reflect quality and indirectly room rates, although we did not specifically rate room cost, since each casino-hotel has a wide variety of room types with wide price ranges. We leave the rest to you.

While focused on the Strip, our Las Vegas Guide also covers Off-Strip casino-resorts near Las Vegas Boulevard and others located in suburban, Las Vegas.

Wynn's is one of the places to be on the Strip. The crowds are large and the gaming action is exciting.  The casino, grounds, eating and shopping are magnificent.  On its opening, the Wynn set a new standard for luxury and its upscale rooms are a cut above.

http://www.encorelasvegas.com/

3131 Las Vegas Blvd. South
Las Vegas, NV 89109
Reservation 888 320 7125

In late 2008, Wynn Las Vegas opened Encore Las Vegas, located next door to the Wynn.   It is all you would expect of a Steve Wynn property and offers over 2000 luxury suites.  The feeling of the property is "opulence", it borrows from the Wynn and in several cases exceeds it.

Bellagio Hotel (aerial viewaerial view of the casino-resort)

The Aria Hotel & Casino (aerial viewAerial view of the casino-resort)
http://www.arialasvegas.com
Reservations 1 800 444 2272

Las Vegas, Nevada 89109

The Palazzo opened mid-January, 2008.  his all-suite property is lavishly styled and its suites feature sunken living rooms that are decorated in a modern European style with "luxurious" appointments.  The hotel is owned by the Sands Corporation, owners of the Venetian, and the two hotel-resorts share services.  Considered as a combined entity, the two hotels will provide over 7,000 rooms.

The hotel has over 5,000 guest room, including 751 suites.  The resort features an enormous casino (171,000 square feet), numerous exceptional restaurants and is the site of many professional concerts and championship sports events in the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas  (aerial viewAerial view of the casino-resort)
http://www.cosmopolitanlasvegas.com/
3708 Las Vegas Boulevard South,
Las Vegas, NV 89109

Notables
Located at the heart of the Strip, the Cosmopolitan, which opened in December of 2010, may be the  last major resort/casino that opens on the strip for quite some time.  The resort's Boulevard Casino features floor-to ceiling windows facing the world-famous strip. The property's soaring towers hold close to 3,000 rooms and the accommodations feature oversized residential style living spaces with large terraces and unique designs.

The Cosmopolitan Las Vegas is a hotel/casino that is quite swanky and fashionable.  However, this fashionable location has never been able to make money and was recently sold for two billion dollars less than it cost to build.  Whether the turn-around, by a venture capital group that has not experience in managing casinos, will turn out well is a matter of significant debate.

The hotels lodging, room quality, restaurant quality and  fashionable nightclubs are a major draw and the hotel remains a popular Las Vegas destination.

The Mandarin Oriental Las Vegas  (aerial viewAerial view of the casino-resort)

The replica of the  Campanile at St. Mark’s Square in Venice is at the front of the building near the Grand Canal (and Las Vegas Boulevard). While not quite like visiting Venice, the Venetian is a luxury hotel with fine service and luxury amenities.  The Palazzo is wedged into the corner between the Venetian and Wynn's, providing three upscale properties in a row.

Always a popular casino, the Palace is, also, known for some of the best live shows in Las Vegas and the biggest stars can usually perform here.

The Cromwell

The Cromwell bills itself as a new Las Vegas Boutique Hotel.  It is one the site of a former one-star dive called Bill's that was a fun place to gamble, if you could stand the smoke.  We find the marketing materials for the hotel to be confusing, but note that they are opening the property in stages and may not yet have decided on their true identity.  The premises will feature a restaurant by Giada, who is known for great recipes and fun food.  Perhaps there is hope for the Cromwell.  Located at 3595 Las Vegas Boulevard South you can find more about them at their website  .

Off Strip (Palms, Hard Rock Hotel, Las Vegas HiltonRio)

There are a number of hotels that are not on the Strip that are reasonably popular.  The Las Vegas Hilton is very popular with the Convention crowd, since it is located right next to the Las Vegas Convention Center.  The Palms is very popular with the in crowd and the RIO has the most popular free show in Las Vegas.

The Palms is very popular with the pro sports crowds and many others.  It is one of the "in" places to be in Las Vegas, even more so since the first Playboy Club in 25 years opened at the Palms late in 2006.  Atop the Palms new Fantasy Tower building, the Playboy Club integrates a club atmosphere with gambling.

Another of the trendy, off-strip hotels. It has a smaller and more intimate feel than many hotels in Las Vegas. If you are a rocker (even the air guitar type) you should spend some time at the Hard Rock Hotel.  Note: The Hardrock is currently adding  almost a thousand rooms to the property, which will be under construction until 2009.  Not that this makes much difference to most visitors of this "hotlist" property.

More Detail on the Information We Provide About Casino-Resorts

The information we provide for each hotel includes its web site URL, telephone number for reservations and the hotel address.

For some resorts we mention “notables” that, in our estimation, set a specific hotel-casino apart from others. Most of the attractions mentioned are fee-based. Check the hotel web sites for more detail. Every hotel has a variety of restaurants to meet your culinary needs.  We showcase the best restaurants on or near the strip in our section on Las Vegas restaurants.  We cover the leading entertainment on the Strip is covered in our section on Best Shows in Las Vegas.

In addition, we provide a map of the Strip that shows the location of the major hotels along with walking distances between major intersections. We've added another map of the Strip using Google Maps with their Satellite View so that you can see the hotels from the air.

The aerial views (symbolized by an airplane towing a camera (aerial viewAerial view of the hotel)   require a lot of bandwidth.  If you have a dial-up connection, you may prefer not to access these map-images.  The are view link is  shown next to the hotel listing.
