As we mentioned previously, Cozumel is a world-renowned dive site known for
its extravagant coral reef and abundant sea life. It was
originally
publicized by Jacques Cousteau in the late 1950s, when he explored the
island's gorgeous, three-mile long Palancar Reef. Palancar is located
to the southwest of the island. While there are numerous
exceptional diving spots on the reef, the most impressive include Palancar
Caves, the Bricks, The Horseshoe, as well as the Garden and Shallows. If
you are a diver, you will not want to miss the opportunity to explore Palancar
Reef.
The Chankanaab park, on the island's southwest coast, is a conservation area
amid the larger Cozumel Reefs National Park. Chankanaab is a great location for snorkeling and family fun.
While adults will want to spend time at the main beach, there is a
children's pool and you can arrange to swim with the Dolphins at
Dolphin Discovery.
In addition, there is a museum at Chankanaab, a botanic
garden and other attractions awaiting your discovery.

Another way to see the beauty of the reefs and wedge in a visit to
Chankanaab is to pay for a ride on the Atlantis Submarine, which
dives up to 100 feet and lets you view the sea life without getting wet.
The trip involves a 12 minute coastal tour on a surface ship that takes you
to a docking site for the Atlantis Submarine. Atlantis will take you
on a 40 minute underwater tour of the reef and other views of Chankanaab's underwater environment. See our advertisement on
the right from Viator for the Atlantis Submarine Cozumel.

San Miguel, port for the ferry and cruise ships , has a hint of colonial charm, but Cozumel depends on
the tourist trade for its livelihood, so you can expect a somewhat
"touristy" experience. There are a number of restaurants serving good
meals and lots of stores for those not interested in water
activities. In addition, the Zocalo,
which includes the main plaza and pier area, is lined with shops
featuring art, jewelry and clothing. Although the nightlife
in Cozumel is somewhat limited, you will find what there is along the Zocalo.
