Segesta
is best known for its remarkably well-preserved Greek temple. While
there is considerable debate over whether the temple was ever
finished, there is little argument that its condition and setting
are among the best in Sicily. Nearby is a Greek Amphitheater
that also is attractively sited. The temple is to the
west of the city of Calatafimi-Segesta.
The detail and sharpness of the stone of the Temple at Segesta is
remarkable for a building that has been standing since the 5th
century B.C. Segesta at one time was a powerful city founded
by one of
the original tribes of Sicily. In the 4th Century B.C. it was
conquered by neighboring Selinunte.
