Erice
The Castello di Venere (Castle of Venus) is on a summit that was
named Mount
San Juliano by the Normans. The existing structure was built
over a temple of Venus that was converted to a castle by the Normans
in the 11th century. Venere was used as a prison during World War
II.
In addition to its castles, Erice, which was originally a Phoenician
settlement, has a number of other interesting monuments, all
assembled in a very pleasant town nestled along the mountain. |
