Erice

Erice   The Castello di Venere (Castle of Venus) is on a summit that was named Mount San Juliano by the Normans.  The existing structure was built over a temple of Venus that was converted to a castle by the Normans in the 11th century. Venere was used as a prison during World War II. In addition to its castles, Erice, which was originally a Phoenician settlement, has a number of other interesting monuments, all assembled in a very pleasant town nestled along the mountain.

Erice has a second castle (below) called the Pepoli Castle that was originally built during the period when Muslim forces controlled Sicily.  The Muslims were eventually ousted by the Normans (11th century) who continued to use the the castle.
