Languedoc- Roussillon ►Carcassonne The walled City of Carcassonne is one of the world's premier examples of a medieval walled and fortified city. Long on history, this town was founded as a Roman fort and its defenses reached their apex in the 1300's. A visit is great fun and you might want to consider spending a night here in order to enjoy the town after the crowds have departed. The old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
