So many places to visit in Poland, so little vacation time available to see them. Read our recommendations on the best places to visit in Poland.

The team at ThereArePlaces has developed a proprietary method for evaluating the attractiveness of towns and regions as tourist destinations. We used this methodology to create our list of the best places to visit in Poland. We believe that the cities and regions described below are the country’s key tourist destinations, contain Poland's best attractions and urge you to visit them during your travels in Poland.

Poland a stable, free-market democracy, joined the European Union in May 2004. Tourist facilities are not highly developed in all areas, and some services taken for granted in other European countries may not be available in some parts of Poland, especially in rural areas.

Poland's cities were devastated during World War II and the country's post war recovery was slowed by communist domination of the government. Poland's countryside is idyllic, while its urban landscapes are a combination of rebuilt old towns and a mixture of functional but not quite stylistic architecture.    Unless you have a good command of the Polish language, we recommend that you visit Poland as a part of a tour arranged by a reputable company. (Read our article on How to evaluate tour operators.)

  • Krakow

    • If you have time to visit just one town in Poland, it should be Krakow.  The town's setting is attractive and its Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is both well  preserved and enchanting. The city's famous merchant town surrounds a large market square and historical houses with opulent interiors abound.

    • Warsaw's Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is the center of tourism in the city. Although much of the original Old Town has been rebuilt and is a modern creation, it is an attractive and interesting destination. The city's architecture reflects years of communist rule but continues to improve.

  • Gdansk  Click for a climate chart of the annual ranges of precipitation and temperature in Gdansk
    • Gdansk can be visited as a day trip from Warsaw.  Many tourists consider Gdansk an interesting place to visit and it has gained notoriety as the center of the Solidarity movement. Gdansk's Old Town is quite charming.

  • Torun
    • Often compared to Krakow but considerably smaller, friendlier, and less touristy, Torun's Old Town is, also, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  Torun was once an important trade center and part of the Hanseatic League.  Its success at trade led the the development wealth and the town's historic building reflect the benefits of excess wealth.

  • Zamosc
    • Zamosc, yet another Polish town with UNESCO World Heritage status, is off  the radarscope of most tourists.  It is an interesting Old Town that deserves your attention, as it is a well-preserved example of a late Renaissance urban environment in both plan and architecture.
