The Palazzo Publico (the building with the impressive tower) sits astride the Piazza del Campo,
an enormous square that is one of the best examples in Italy of squares built in Medieval times. Today the
Piazza del Campo serves many of the same functions as in the past, including the Palio,
the world famous bare-backed horse race around the square held twice each

matched by its interior beauty.

The Piccolomini Library (a part of the Duomo) has been refurbished and is
stunning. This photograph shows some of the ceiling detail. The series of
frescoes along the walls recount events in the life of Cardinal Piccolomini
of Siena, who became Pope Pius II
