Villa Romana del Casale

The Villa Romana del Casale   is the ruin of a large, luxurious Roman Country Villa in the Sicilian countryside, not far from the town of Piazza Amerina.  The site is noteworthy for many things, but it is best known for some of the finest, best-preserved Roman mosaics in the world.

Although there is evidence of earlier use of the site, it is believed that the older buildings were destroyed by earthquake in the 4th Century A.D.  The palace that you can see today dates from the end of the same century.  Although 50 rooms have been excavated, these represent only a fraction of the complex.  The rooms available to visitors contain mosaiced floors of incredible quality and beauty.  It is thought that the mosaics were the work or artisans from North Africa.

As shown below, the mosaics at Casale are colorful, well-preserved and of excellent quality

Bikini's in the 4th century were, apparently, practical attire for a sporting competition. By the way, it is simply untrue that Casale was built by Hugh Heffner.
