A visit to the Borromean
Islands is recommended. Fisherman's Island above (Isola Pescatori)
offers great views of the lake and the neighboring islands. Be sure the see the
Borromeo Palace (17th century) on Isola Bella shown in the
photograph below and plan on spending some time wandering its beautiful gardens
and amphitheater. The palace has many delightful treasure and is a
treat to tour. If you are a gardener, you will likely want to spend
time inspecting the terraced Italian Garden. The island is usually open from late
March to late October during daylight hours.
The Isola Madre (Mother
Island) is the largest of the islands and has a wonderful botanic garden that is
a pleasure to tour. The official website to the Borromean Island can be
found
here.

Lago Maggiore is the second largest of the Lakes and it heads in Switzerland.
Ascona and Locarno, which is shown below, are the two leading Swiss cities on
the Lake. In addition to being a crossing two countries, Lake Maggiore
also marks the border between the Piedmont and Lombardy regions of Italy.
Although you can drive along much of Lake Maggiore's shore, the lake is
best seen from the water. So plan to spend some time cruising around the
lake's beautiful scenery.
