Schloss Neuschwanstein
is the best known castle in Germany. Although it is a recent
creation (late 19th century), the castle has attracted attention for
its "fairy tale" look and the mysterious circumstances surrounding
the life and death of Ludwig II, the king of Bavaria responsible for
its creation. It has been concluded by historians and others
who have studied his life, that Ludwig, a recluse, built his castles
as refuges from the demands of being king. By all records Ludwig II
was a shy, sensitive man who did not relish affairs of state or
governance, but did revel in the rewards of being a royal.
Ludwig II was a
friend and great admirer of Richard Wagner, the composer, and the
castle was dedicated to Wagner by the King. Many of the
pictures and decorations in the castle represent the medieval works
that influenced Wagner's operas.
Neuschwanstein Castle is one of the most popular
attractions in Germany. In summer, you can expect to wait
several hours to enter. |
