The area around Carcassonne has been been the site of settlements since the 8th century B.C. and later was settled by the Romans. The beginnings of the present day walled fortifications began in earnest around the 13th century. Carcassonne prospered over the next few centuries, but politics and religion intermixed and led to the decline of the city and the region after the 17th century. |
