Lake Wörthersee and Klagenfurt have an intimate and unifying relationship. The city is connected to the lake via a canal (Lendkanal), although its western edge (shown above) abuts the lake. There are a number of interesting towns to visit along the lake's shore, as well as miles of delightful scenery.

Located on a hilltop above Melk, the Benedictine Abbey remains a monastic house today, over 900 years since the founding of the original abbey on this site. The present abbey was constructed in the 18th century in the Baroque style and is know for both its splendid architecture. The Abbey's church (below) is well-know for the many fine frescos that cover its interior walls.
