Cozumel and Cancun are two extremely attractive vacation sites in the area of the Yucatan often called the Mexican Riviera or the Riviera Maya. This is an area with spectacular beaches, warm temperatures and numerous outdoor activities. It is a resort area that caters to both parents and kids, offering, in addition to beach time, golf, snorkeling, scuba, and a host of water sports (including waverunner rentals). Fine restaurants and trendy nightclubs help ensure that there is never a dull moment. For the history buff, the area from the Yucatan to Tulum contains several excellent archaeological treasures from the Mayan civilization. There are spectacular ruins at Tulum ( a well-preserved, walled town). Less than 30 miles northwest of Tulum, you will find Coba, a largely unrestored, but fabulous Mayan settlement. Coba was one of the great Mayan cities during what is now called the Classical Period of the Mayan Culture. The most famous of the Mayan settlements in the Cancun area are the ruins at Chichén Itzá, which are located in the northern Yucatan. Although it may be tough to pull yourself away from the beach, you should take time to tour this amazing site. Be sure to see the Great Pyramid and the Warrior's Temple. To maximize your time and enjoyment of any of the ancient Mayan sites, consider taking a tour or hiring a personal guide.
Both Cancun and Cozumel were severely damaged by hurricanes in 2005, but the recovery effort was completed late in 2006. Cancun has bounced back and many believe that the recovery from Hurricane Wilma is going to be a good thing for the area. Hotels, restaurants and night sports have been redone and are in better shape than they have been in years. New vegetation has been planted, the number of palm trees has been increased and the beaches have more sand than ever. |
Great beaches, terrific resorts, what's not to like about Cancun?

Although not as developed as areas to the North (Cancun), the beaches of Tulum are attractive and more rustic.
