Erosion, age, and building have taken their toll, but we do our best to show you the approximate location of the original seven hills. In several cases, the original hills were actually small ridges extending from a larger volcanic area (Quirinal, Viminal, Esquiline, and Caelian). The Capitoline, Palatine and Aventine Hills were west of the others, but the Capitoline is the only one that retains a distinct hill-like profile. Click here to explore our Guide to Rome. .
